This is a really smashing (hardback) picture book, which has been both written and illustrated by Sally Anne Garland. It’s a beautifully-told story about the power of determination, self-reliance and kindness, as a little girl braves the odds to keep her rickety raft afloat, save others in danger and achieve her long-held goal of reaching a distant island. The beguiling illustrations are just delightful: I love the slightly muted colour palette and the cheeky little seagull that graces each spread. I don’t think you can introduce children to the concepts of resilience and compassion too soon, and this story does that brilliantly – it’s a wonderful addition to our reading corner .
